A UX Research Case Study

Problem Statement : The pandemic has put a halt on all live events and movie screenings. Bookevents, an event booking app has seen a complete wipe out of their bookings. As a UX designer, Bookevents has asked you to come up with a UX for pivoting their business in this situation.

The Problem

Bookevents is preparing for the 'new normal' of events taking place. As a UX designer you first want to understand the behavioral shift that the pandemic has brought and its impact on attending live events & movie screenings. Plan a research to identify new entertainment patterns emerging for the business.

User Interviews

User 1

  • Doesn’t want to give the extra charges they put during online booking

  • Checks if the seats are available or not for the show to decide if she should go there physically or not

  • The offers and ads are fake and annoying 

  • Wants genuine discounts

  • Will go only if the reviews are good

  • Doesn't like how overpriced the food is , ending up not buying it at all

  • Uses it to only check location, price and show timings

  • Can check if the shows are filled up or not

User 2

  • Likes the ease and how they can book in just a minute

  • Ads and new upcoming shows were more highlighted than what she wanted to find

  • Booking should have a significant space

  • Wants the app to identify theatre near them according to GPS location

  • Ideal experience- Opening the homepage and knowing where she wants to put the information

  • After cancelling the ticket , you won’t get the full refund

  • Only limited number of seats with proper social distancing

 User 3

  • The apps need to build trust with public during pandemic

  • Apps can verify which theatres are following the strict sanitation rules

  • People can easily pirate the movie if it’s streamed online

  • Theatres can install plastic sheets between seats

  • Ideal experience- Opening the homepage and knowing where she wants to put the information

  • The apps should conduct an audit and verify if all the safety precautions are being taken seriously or not , that would enhance their credibility

User 4

  • Gets to know about events through pop up notification

  • Doesn’t like how notifications sometimes provide unnecessary details

  • Before Covid used to book movie shows once or twice a week

  • Used to go to flea markets once a month

  • Attended many live events because of pop up notifications 

  • During Covid because of the regulations , seat arrangements and not allowed to take food inside made her not want to go to a movie theatre 

  • Likes the convenience, how we can get info on everything at the same place and how one doesn’t have to open multiple tabs

  • Finds unrelated ads annoying, would rather see ads of trailers

  • In an ideal scenario would like to book every type of entertainment in only one platform

  • Wants a movie pass or an event pass for the people who go frequently such that it can save a lot of money

  • Getting a package deal along with booking tickets like gifting Netflix package

  • Would love to see a live streaming of shows at the same time as theatre timings by collaborating with some online streaming app which also has a chat box so that people can socialise

User 5

  • After Covid they have to seat alternatively while wearing a mask

  • The intermission was longer cause they had to sanitize the seats again

  • It’s all about the big screen , the whole atmosphere, the vibe , the popcorn

  • Books online 70% of time cause it’s much more easier 

  • Colour palette plays a very important role

  • Decisions are mostly fixed because she lives in a small city, things are pretty sorted

  • It should work fast cause our generation really likes everything fast

  • Should cater us in away which matches our mood 

  • Wants the app to direct us to another streaming platforms in the times of pandemic

  • Feels alienated in a theatre because of new precautions

  • Misses the old vibe in theatres

  • Likes online booking cause you save out the paper making it a sustainable process

  • Covid is taking out the entire movie atmosphere

  • Theatres are taking precautions and that's why they are still functioning well

Locating the users location with GPS services for more accuracy and suggesting the nearest theatre or live events which will be coming soon.

The staff from book events should conduct a survey by sending one of their employees to physically go and check if the theatres are taking all the necessary precautions maintaining sanitation  or not. And only the ones which are successfully verified should be allowed for bookings on the app. That way we can ensure safety , reassure users and gain their trust. Also, the seating in theatres should be arranged with alternate seats open and one seat empty such that the rules for social distancing are strictly being followed.

Even after ensuring all the safety , if some people are still paranoid to go out. This apps can collaborate with online streaming services like Netflix, prime or have their own streaming services where people can book the ticket for an online movie show and watch them from the comfort of their home. Since people cannot socialize enough in this times of pandemic, we can provide a chatroom for the people who’re watching the show at the same time such that they can make new friends.    

The   process of online movie shows could be same as that of theatre shows. They will be available for streaming only for some days and will be gone the same way theatres stop showing the movies. This could be the new normal of watching movies in these difficult times. To redeem for the actual theatre experience , we can offer them special deals and passes along with free Netflix subscription for months to lure them in. Also this way no one has to buy a physical ticket that means lots of paper will get saved . So it’s eco friendly as well !!!  For people who needs their popcorn bucket while watching a movie , book events can collaborate or learn from food delivery apps or link with them and ensure the sanitation and protection of the food and deliveries. This changes are inevitable in pandemic situation , so by providing users with new ways they might adapt well to it for the sake of “new normal.”

  1. How can we make the color scheme more user friendly?

How Might We Question

Conclusion

  • Even in the stressful situation of Pandemic , there will always be a silver lining. Yes. it will take a while to adapt, but there is always a way. 

  • Pandemic or not, digitization will take over the world next decade. It's inevitable that lots of our traditional ways of entertainment and living are gonna experience a change.

  • If the companies wants to keep up with the trend , they'll have to be more open towards adapting new changes and make smart business moves by reaching out to keep up with the new trends.
